The Watermelons Are Gone!

There are few foods that all 5 of us like at the same time. Each day is a challenge for me to cook breakfast, make lunches, or prepare dinners that everyone in the family will eat. I can't keep straight what everyone likes or dislikes anymore. My mantra, while the kids were little, was, "Eat it or starve!". Now it is, "Eat it or make something else.". The problem with that is that what they fix is not necessarily the most nutritious food. I have stopped telling Grace what to eat altogether because she is the pickiest and more often than not, I would get mad at her for not eating what I fixed and then choosing something junky. That aspect of it hasn't changed, but she is open to my suggestions and is willing to take vitamins.

Anyway, there is one food that I know that all my family loves and that is WATERMELON! This summer the watermelons have been delicious and I have mastered picking out good ones. I chose the seedless which tend to be smaller so I would pick up two at a time. I usually cut them up within a day of bringing them home from the store and they would be consumed within hours-one earlier in the week, one later.

But now, all the watermelons are gone. The season is over and we are saddened. However, we are entering pumpkin and apple season so my taste buds are starting to crave pumpkin scones, pies, muffins, and pancakes as well as apple pie, butter, and crisp. I am going to have to pace myself!

Sad about the watemelons...I know.

This too is one of my perpetual frustrations with our kids. They are so stinking picky when it comes to food. I hate it. We found 6 or 8 dishes that we can all mange to get down--even the kids--and they are on constant rotation. Oh well.

My problem is I get sick of the same things and I try new things ALOT. Nothing wierd or out of the ordinary, just new. Mike will ask me, once in a while, to fix somthing he likes and hasn't had because I keep trying new things. I figure, they don't like most things I make anyway so I am just going to try new stuff? I subscribe to a yummy cooking magazine and get all kinds of ordinary, made over, recipes (low fat)and sometimes get the entire week's meal out of one mag. Kind of fun but may be tiresome to the family. Sometimes, you just got to have the old stand bys, too! Love you!
